I was wondering if registration on the forum will eventually give us firmware update access,

or if we need to have a service contract,- there was no information to be found anywhere.

It would be silly in order to be able to just reset the switch (via USB method) to require a contract?

Customers with a valid service contract can access the software upgrades on the download page, benefiting from years of software development and innovation. If you do not currently have a service contract, then you may contact an Arista sales representative, contact details are here:
