Has anyone done this before…..I currently have static RPs configured what I am looking to do have BSR advertise these static RPs that I  have.  How would I go about doing this, I wasn’t able to find any docs on it, was hoping someone can either point me to the correct docs or give some advice how to do it.

Hi Warren, 

Thanks for posting in this forum.

For your requirement, you would need to remove the static RP configuration from these switches and configure them as candidate RP for the dynamic RP election. Below are the sample config steps and BSR RP discovery process in brief.

I am pasting the sample config steps below, but a lots of optional configuration is available. Please refer the guid, my colleague Aniket shared above.

  • On each switch remove the static rendezvous point.

(config)#router pim sparse-mode

(config-router-pim-sparse)#ipv4

(config-router-pim-sparse-ipv4)#no rp address x.x.x.x

  • Once you have removed the RP configuration, add the below config in rp-candidate switches:

(config)#router pim sparse-mode

(config-router-pim-sparse)#ipv4

(config-router-pim-sparse-ipv4)#rp candidate interface_number

 

  • Configure the one switch (which you decide)  as a BSR (Bootstrap router).

(config)#router pim bsr

(config-router-pim-bsr)#ipv4

(config-router-pim-bsr-ipv4)#candidate interface_number

 

  • Verify if the command worked.

(config-router-pim-bsr-ipv4)#sh ip pim bsr

How BSR RP discovery works:

  1. BSR candidates advertise its parameters to elect a BSR. These messages are sent to 224.0.0.13. 
  2. All candidate RPs send periodic Unicast Candidate-RP-Advertisement messages to the Elected BSR’s IP address.
  3. Elected BSR includes information of all the discovered RPs in the BSR messages.
  4. All Multicast routers extract the RP list from the Bootstrap message and elect a RP per group basis (Using RP hash method)
