Hi,

My customer wants to build L3VPN over GRE between 7280CR2A-60 and Juniper MX960, but L3VPN over GRE is not supported on 7280CR2A-60. Is there any workaround or roadmap of this feature on J/J+/J2 ?

Hi Guohong,

We don't support GRE tunnel and Vxlan together. So if you are planning to use L3VPN with data plane Vxlan, then it won't work with GRE. I don't think there is a roadmap yet to support Vxlan and GRE together.

However, a probable alternative would be to use MPLS as the data plane for the L3VPN and you can use MPLS over GRE, which is supported. Related article- https://eos.arista.com/eos-4-17-0f/mpls-over-gre-encapsulation/

Hi Aniket,

Thanks for your answer. I've read the article - https://eos.arista.com/eos-4-17-0f/mpls-over-gre-encapsulation/ but it lists some limitations as below. So MPLS over GRE isn't suitable for L3VPN.

  • Supports single MPLS label push over the MPLS-over-GRE tunnel.
  • Only IPv4 routes may be resolved via MPLS-over-GRE tunnels.

Hi Guohong,

That is right, we won't be able to use L3VPN MPLS and GRE together (on same device).

One way that may help you is by dividing the GRE Tunnel and MPLS between two Arista switches (rather than having both on one switch).

For example

Host1-----[SW1-GRE-Tunnel]-----------[SW2-MPLS-PE]--------[MPLS-P-Routers]-----------[SW3-MPLS-PE]---------[SW4-GRE-Tunnel]-----Host2

By dividing the GRE and MPLS Tunnels, you may achieve your requirement . You can discuss with your Arista SE (System Engineer) as well who can guide you further with your requirement.

Regards,

Aniket
