• How to Collect Wired and Wireless Traces Using CloudVision Wi-Fi

Introduction

This article describes how to collect wired and wireless packet traces for troubleshooting, from CloudVision Wi-Fi or Wireless Manager and stream to a laptop (wireless trace) or upload to Wireless Manager (wireless and wired traces).

Prerequisites

  • Administrator privileges on CloudVision Wi-Fi (CVW) and Wireless Manager (WM).

Solution

Collect a Wired or Wireless Trace via CVW

  1. Log in to CVW and navigate to Monitor > Wi-Fi > Access Points.

  2. Select the device and click the Troubleshooting > Capture Packet Trace option on the toolbar.

  3. Enter the following information to collect both wireless and wired traces.

    • Duration of packet trace: Specify the time interval in minutes for the packet capture.
    • Streaming Option: Select the streaming option from the drop-down list.
      • Wireshark on a local machine – make sure that your computer has connectivity to the selected Arista device over ports – TCP 2002 and TCP 1024.
      • Upload to Server – the packet capture will be uploaded to the server and can be downloaded from the Packet Trace History option in the Troubleshoot menu for the device.
    • Wireless Settings
      • Traffic Selection: Select the type of traffic that needs to be captured.
      • Packet types: Apply a packet filter for the trace.
      • Frequency Band and Channel selection: Select the operating protocol 802.11b/g or 802.11a and specify the channel on which packet captures needs to be conducted.
    • Wired Settings
      • Interface: Select the interface to capture the packets (Only C-60 and C-75 models have options to enable eth1 interface).
      • Enter VLAN ID
  4. Click Start Packet Capture

  5. You will see an ‘Ongoing Activity’ dialog box that shows the packet capture status.

  6. After the trace has been captured successfully, you will be able to Download or Open it based on the streaming option selected.

Collect a Wireless Trace for a Client via CVW

  1. Log in to CVW and navigate to Monitor > Wi-Fi > Clients
  2. Right-click the required client and select Capture Packet Trace

  3. Select the device which has the strongest RSSI value.
  4. Enter the parameters of the capture, as described above. No Wired Settings will be required.
  5. Click Start Packet Capture. You will see an ‘Ongoing Activity’ dialog box that shows the packet capture status.
  6. After the trace has been captured successfully, you will be able to Download or Open it based on the streaming option selected.

Collect a Wired or Wireless Trace via WM

  1. Log in to WM and go to Monitoring > Managed devices.

  2. Select the required Arista device, open the More menu and click Packet Capture.

  3. The Packet Capture window will be displayed. Enter the following information to collect both wireless and wired traces.
    • Timeout: Specify the time interval in minutes for the packet capture.
    • Streaming Option: Select the streaming option from the drop-down list. If you select:
      • Wireshark on a local machine, make sure that the machine has connectivity to the selected Arista device over ports – TCP 2002 and TCP 1024.
      • Upload to Server, the Packet capture will be uploaded to the server and can be downloaded from the Packet Capture History option under the Managed Devices > More menu.
    • Wireless Settings
      • Traffic Selection: Select the type of traffic that needs to be captured.
      • Packet types: Apply a packet filter for the trace.
      • Protocol and Channel selection: Select the operating protocol 802.11bg or 802.11a and specify the channel on which packet captures needs to be conducted.
    • Wired Settings
      • Interface: Select the interface to capture the packets (Only C-60 and C-75 models have options to enable eth1 interface
      • Filter: Optionally, enable a packet filter for the trace.
  1. Click Start Troubleshooting.
  2. When the capture is ready, you will receive a notification at the upper right corner of the WM UI. Click it to view the trace via the streaming option selected previously.

Collect a Wireless Trace for an AP BSSID via WM

  1. Login to WM and go to Monitoring > Security > APs.
  2. Select the required AP MAC Address >Packet Capture

  3. On the Packet capture window, the list of nearby APs/sensors will be displayed. Select the device that shows the strongest RSSI.

  4. Enter the parameters of the capture as described above.

  5. Click Start Troubleshooting.
  6. Once the trace is completed, you will receive a notification at the upper right corner of the WM UI. Click it to view the trace via the streaming option selected previously.
