Hi Team,

Let’s say I have CVP cluster (Active) in one site and another CVP cluster (Standby) in another site which together are Telemetry destination for all sites of customer.

I’m curious to know how failure scenario’s are tackled. For example,

  1. How configuration is sync’d between two clusters
  2. How clusters detect each other failure. If Active CVP cluster is down, how standby CVP cluster take over?
  3. Let’s say if a site loses access to Active CVP cluster but has reachability to standby CVP cluster, how to avoid split-brain scenario. Is this failure scenario valid?

Also, do you mind sharing some reference/white paper on  CVP multi-site cluster

Hi Bhargav,

You could make use of the Arista CloudVision Ansible modules to synchronise a designated set of CVP Configlets across multiple CVP instances and to also send telemetry data to multiple CVP instances. But only one cluster can act as the authoritative provisioning cluster. You could read about the implementation in detail in the write up below.

To answer your query 2 and 3, the active-standby model or HA feature between CVP clusters is not out yet.

Hi Debasish,

Understood on the feature implementation. How to make a particular CVP cluster as an authoritative provisioning cluster? Also, if one CVP cluster is failed, do we need to change authoritative provisioning cluster manually?

Hi Bhargav,

I am happy to share new update and let you know that you have a new writeup published that talks about CVP Multisite HA deployment.

https://eos.arista.com/cvp-ha-deployment-guide/#Multi-Site_Deployment

Please note, as described in this article the Minimum CVP version should be 2020.2.x/2020.3.x/2021.1, that has support for this implementation.

Please refer to the section Multi-Site Deployment>Dual Cluster that explains how you can achieve this with 2 different Models and what to expect:

  1. Cold Standby
  2. Warm Standby

However, as described in the article, there is still some manual intervention required in both the models. Let me know if anything is unclear.

Regards,
Debasish
