Does anyone have an updated count of VRFs supported per-platform? Also, is the vrf limit a hard number, or is a higher count allowed with potential performance degradation?

The materials at the link below seem to be out of date, and I haven’t been able to find any public release notes showing the counts have changed.

Virtual Routing and Forwarding (VRF) Fundamentals

I’m specifically looking for VRF limits on the following devices:

DCS-7280SR-48C6-F

DCS-7060-CX-32S

For background: I’m trying to use overlay VRFs to enforce traffic separation for multiple tenants, while allowing for full speed inter-rack communication in a L3Leaf-spine topology between VLANs (VXLAN VNIs) within said VRF. If VRF scaling higher than 24 unique RD’s isn’t an option, how are others handling multitenancy? We are planning to use PA as a firewall vendor, so could potentially place all tenants with similar functions into one VRF and rely on MSS tags to forward to the FW, but it’s not an idea I’m quite comfortable with yet.

Hello Tyler,

Amount of supported VRF per platform in general depends on the amount of RAM onboard. In case of 7060-CX which has 4GB of RAM it will be up to 16 VRFs. In case of the 7280SR with max of 16GB of RAM will support up to 32 VRFs.

Regarding the design, I would strongly suggest to address question to your Arista SE as there is no straight answer which will fit all requirements of yours particular design and in order to answer it, much more detail oriented approach will be required.

Thank you,

Sergey

Just for future reference, in addition to what Sergey has mentioned, if you do have access to the hardware and would like to know the Max number of VRFs supported with your current version of code then you can issue the ”show vrf” Cli command that will provide the maximum number of Non-Default VRFs supported in your current version of code. For eg: the 7060 indicates a total of 15 non-default VRFs are supported as per ”show vrf”. The Base instance is also counted as a VRF hence a total of 16 VRFs are supported on the 7060.

7060#sh ver | egrep -i ”DCS|image”
Arista DCS-7060CX-32S-R
Software image version: 4.16.6FX-7060X
7060#

7060#show vrf | grep Max
Maximum number of vrfs allowed: 15
7060#

7280#sh ver | egrep -i ”dcs|image”
Arista DCS-7280CR-48-F
Software image version: 4.17.3F
7280#

7280#sh vrf | grep -i max
Maximum number of vrfs allowed: 31
7280#
